WHAT IS TALLSHIP ISLAND ADVENTURE CAMP?

DAY CAMP: EXPLORER CAMP is designed to encourage growing minds to appreciate and explore nature. After a week of fun at the dock in Rainbow Harbor, explorers sail away for an optional overnight sleepover at sea.

5 DAY: ADVENTURER CAMP | 12 DAY: VOYAGER CAMP campers will explore topics in marine biology, maritime history, island ecology, and traditional maritime arts! Learn the ropes as you challenge yourself with exciting new opportunities: leaving the dock, setting and adjusting sails, keeping a ship on course, and living aboard a ship. New friends, star-gazing, and unforgettable island fun!

Campers will be required to follow the existing onboard COVID policy throughout the week. Activities are planned with physical distancing in mind.

Youth, get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

Spend the summer on the beautiful Southern California coast in a way that most people never experience. While at sea and on the island, we will explore topics in marine biology, maritime history, island ecology and have some fun with traditional Maritime arts! These are some of the most memorable summer camps in Southern California!

No sailing experience is necessary… we will provide that! Learn the ropes of sailing a large vessel as you challenge yourself with exciting new opportunities: leaving the dock, setting and adjusting sails, keeping a ship on course, setting the anchor, and living aboard a ship for a week or two. Make new friends, eat great food, listen to the sound of the sea, and gaze at the stars at night.

Our camps are offered aboard all of our vessels: the twin 110′ brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, and 130′ schooner American Pride. For the Adventure & Voyager Camps, each camper sleeps onboard at night in their own bunk. During the day we do activities on the boat, on the island, and everywhere in between. Camp trips depart from Long Beach and San Pedro, CA, and visit one or more harbors off the coast depending on weather and sea conditions.

How do I sign my camper up for summer camp?

To sign up for a LAMI/CMI summer camp go to lamitopsail.org/seacamp/.  Scroll down past “Dates and Prices”.  Add a quantity to the camp session you want.  Click “Checkout”, then “Continue”, complete the online form and make your payment.

What are the summer camp refund and transfer policies?

Our priority is always to accommodate the camper, so we will work diligently to make another camp session available with no transfer fee.  If transfer to a different camp session is not possible, we will provide credit for other LAMI/CMI sails, programs, or merchandise.

What safety training does your crew have?

Our crew is first aid, CPR and lifeguard certified. All adult Los Angeles Maritime Institute crew, staff, and volunteers have completed a US Department of Justice background check, including fingerprinting.  All crew and staff have completed in Youth Protection Training offered by the Boy Scouts of America.

What are the COVID and other safety practices?

To ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all our campers, staff, and volunteers, we have adapted camp protocols to be aligned with best practices in the following areas:

Physical Distancing: Activities, games, and crafts will be developed with physical distancing in mind.

Face masks: Campers are encouraged to wear their masks as much as possible, especially at drop-off, pick-up, below decks, and during group-focused activities. Everyone on board will be asked to wash/replace masks daily.

Hygiene Practices: Discussion on hygiene will be held with campers and crew on the first day of camp, and at gatherings in the morning and afternoon as needed.

Wellness Screening: Campers will need to be COVID-19 tested 72-hours prior to boarding the ship. All campers will have their temperature monitored throughout the week, each morning and before dinner.

Sunscreen: Campers are expected to apply their own sunscreen throughout the day.

Swimming

Swimming is encouraged, but participation will depend on the comfort level of the camper. It will occur under well-established safety protocols.  Swimming will initially take place at a calm beach, where we will observe camper comfort with the water. Life jackets, wet suits, and floatation devices will be available and encouraged.  Our crew are lifeguard certified.

What should campers bring?

We will provide a detailed list of what to bring.  In summary, in a soft-sided duffle bag, you should pack clothing and footwear for the vessel and shore, hat, toiletries, sunscreen, seasickness remedies and/or personal medications (as required), water bottle, flashlight, journal, and/or reading material.  Bedding (sleeping bag or blanket, pillow) may be packed separately and rolled, and tied up for transport.
