Located in San Pedro, California, Ship 1992 is a Sea Scout Ship chartered by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI). Our program is available to all youth between the ages of 14 and 21.
- We get together every Sunday afternoon, where we learn leadership and maritime skills, either sailing aboard the LAMI Brigantine Tall Ships Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson or participating in water sports such as small craft boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding and more.
Our Sea Scouts/Youth Crew program provides alternative access to sailing aboard our fleet of small sailboats, Shazam and Le Petite Sayula. This allows youth volunteers more access to sailing as well as providing them more exposure to sailboats and boating in general, bolstering a deeper understanding, interest, and confidence towards sailing and sailboat handling. These skills are transferable experiences when sailing aboard other boats.
Sea Scouting is an inclusive co-ed program offered by BSA Scouts America for young people. The program operates through Sea Scout units known as Ships which are made up of youth and advisors, just like you!

High Adventure In, On, and Around the Water
Sea Scouting is an inclusive program through the Scouts BSA for all youth aged 14-21 (or 13 and completed the 8th grade). It’s operated through Sea Scout Ships, units of youth and advisors just like you! Come join the fun with Sea Scout Ship 1992 in San Pedro!
Adventure
You and your friends lead your Sea Scout program, so you make it what you want. In Sea Scouts you may cruise the San Juan Islands, Scuba dive in the Florida Keys, or paddle river near your home. You may cruise aboard “America’s Tall Ship” the USCG Barque Eagle. In Sea Scouts, you build your own adventure!
Advancement and Awards
Sea Scouts are recognized and rewarded for the things they learn and do. You can earn valuable certifications in Scuba, boating safety, lifesaving, and CPR, as well as advance in rank from Apprentice to Quartermaster. Each certification and level of advancement marks your growth as a sailor and a leader.
Training
Sea Scouts receive training in seamanship and leadership. From regular ship outings, to long cruises, to a weekend of Coast Guard training at Safety at Sea, to the weeklong SEAL (Sea Scout Experience Advanced Leadership) training, you will be learning every step of the way whether you realize it or not.

No matter what draws a Sea Scout to the water, a future career in the military, the maritime industry, or a lifelong hobby of recreationaal boating, Sea Scouting will provide hands-on seamanship and leadership training that will put a Sea Scout one step ahead of the rest, no matter the path they choose.

We get to participate in these team-based competitions each year to show off our skills.
Southwest Rendezvous
This competition takes place at the Port of LA in San Pedro, CA on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Ancient Mariners Regata (AMR)
This competition takes place at the Cal Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA every year in the spring.
