Celebrating Community at Art and Photos for the Cause Opening Reception benefitting LAMIWhen a generous group of local artists and photographers asked if they could host a month-long art show benefitting our educational programs, little did we know it would turn into such a beautiful celebration of community and connection in San Pedro and on the LA Waterfront! More than a dozen community members donated items for the art show – Art and Photos for a Cause – which were on display at fINdings Art Center in the heart of the San Pedro Arts & Cultural District, April 4 – May 2, 2024.

Opening on First Thursday in April, the show was one the of the stops for that month’s guided ArtWalk. Linda Grimes, Executive Director of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, who spearheads both the First Thursday ArtWalk and the mural project that is displayed on the side of our now-beautified Building G, took the opportunity to present Bruce with his framed print of the mural at the art show’s Opening Reception.

That presentation included so many touch points of community collaboration and connections – both of people and to the history of the community – through the mural creation process, relationships with the Port of Los Angeles and the new West Harbor development, the contributions and connections of the late Annette Ciketic and fINDings, and how that led to this art show. You can watch a video on those remarks here:

Celebrating Community at Art and Photos for the Cause Closing Reception benefitting LAMIThe Closing Reception on First Thursday in May was equally touching as a celebration of community, with such supportive members of our community attending both receptions. At the Closing Reception, Robel Afewerki – who spearheaded the art show along with LAMI volunteer and photographer Kerinia Cusick – presented Bruce with a beautiful piece of original art he created to represent LAMI and what we do, which he calls “Anchor Light America.” You can watch a video of that presentation and his beautiful remarks here.

If you missed the art show, have no fear. We shot a live video at the Closing Reception, where Kerinia showed us around the gallery, and you can see that video below. Once again, thank you to everyone who took part in making this art show a success, and supported us and the participants through attending and/or purchasing the pieces. Truly community at its best!
