Shortly after we wrapped up the 2024 Festival of Sail, we joined our friends and education partners at AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles for the Grand Opening of their Center of Innovation, a 35-acre campus right here in the Port of Los Angeles. It was a wonderful morning filled with celebration of this amazing accomplishment that President and CEO Terry Tamminen said has “taken almost a decade, but thanks to all of you, we made it!”
The support of the community was palpable as local leaders joined in the celebration. Mayor Karen Bass called it “a historic day in our city and in our state.” Congresswoman Nanette Barragán shared similar sentiments, as well as how “we need to brag about it, so it can be the example of what we can do to build the Blue Economy.” We absolutely agree, and we especially appreciated Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka’s well-deserved kudos to the AltaSea team!
Councilmember Tim McOsker – no stranger to the San Pedro community or AltaSea, having served as Mr. Tamminen’s predecessor and AltaSea’s first attorney – was celebrated for his part, and also joined in the celebration, likening it to exploring space in the 60’s. He also spoke about his history with the building, the project and the people involved.
We are proud to be AltaSea’s oldest education partner, and we look forward to continuing to work with them as they build out this state-of-the-art facility – a hub for marine research, sustainable tech, and ocean innovation – just down the street from us. Enjoy a few photos of the event and the space, including Executive Director Bruce Heyman with our Board Chair – and AltaSea Board Member – Eric Johnson of West Harbor, as well as our own Alice Taylor and Nancy Richardson with Madeline Stewart of the L.A. STEM Collective and Linda Grimes of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District. The Future is Blue!
